Endocrine Surgery
Endocrine surgery is the specialist management and surgery of
the endocrine glands, which are the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal
and pancreas. The pituitary gland is also an endocrine gland but
its surgical disorders are dealt with by Neurosurgeons or ENT
Surgeons.
Although in endocrine surgery the responsibility for the
patient's care ultimately rests with the surgeon the care of the
patient is very much a team approach. The team includes; medical
endocrinologists who help the surgeon decide whether or not surgery
is necessary; radiologists expert in pre-operative and
intra-operative ultrasound; anaesthetists expert in the special
needs of the patient undergoing surgery, and pathologists who have
made a special study of endocrine diseases. Oncologists are also an
integral part of the team, advising on the need for radiation
treatment or chemotherapy at all stages of the management
process.
The hospital's endocrine surgical unit has special experience in
the care of:
- Thyroid cancer
- Goitres
- Thyroid lymphoma
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Phaeochromocytomas
- Cushing's Disease
- Conn's Syndrome
- Insulinoma
- Gastrinoma
- MEN 1 Syndrome
- MEN 2 Syndrome
Unlike non-cancerous thyroid disease, which is commonly treated
by the team, most endocrine tumours are rare and need great
expertise to achieve the best possible results. Since it's opening
in 1981, the Bupa Cromwell has an Endocrine Unit of international
standing with experience in the medical and surgical treatment of
malignant and non-malignant endocrine disorders. The Bupa Cromwell
Hospital team prides itself on its facilities, standard of care and
team approach.
