Co-director Professor Bodo Lippitz reflects on his first year
at Bupa Cromwell Hospital’s Gamma Knife Centre and outlines
his future plans.
9 September 2009
Bupa Cromwell Hospital’s Gamma Knife Centre is headed up by
Professor Christer Lindquist and Professor Bodo Lippitz who,
between them, have over 45 years of experience in Gamma Knife
surgery. Recently, Professor Lippitz celebrated his first year at
the hospital and with Professor Lindquist and the Gamma Knife team
has grown the unit’s patient reach, and extended its connections
with other hospitals.
Reflecting on his first year, Professor
Lippitz says: “I have been impressed by the professionalism of the
people working at Bupa Cromwell Hospital. It’s an extremely well
organised setting with very strict routines and clear-cut rules
which are followed. We’ve passed the IR(ME)R and ISO
9001/2008inspections, which are both qualitative-related
inspections, with no problems. This is a testament to the team
working here. Ian Paddick, our Consultant Physicisthas just
published a book on dose planning, which is another example of our
strong credentials in this area of medicine.”
Going forward, Professor Lippitz is keen to
create a network of hospitals that work together as an ‘open
centre’, broadening the reach of Gamma Knife treatment. Bupa
Cromwell Hospital works with NHS hospitals such as Charing Cross,
Queen’s Square and King’s College, and is looking to expand this
network of NHS hospitals.
Professor Lippitz adds: “We have recently had
major discussions with Primary Care Trusts and see it as very
positive that they acknowledge the scientific evidence and value of
Gamma Knife treatment. It would be ideal to combine private and
public enterprise so that these very sophisticated technologies can
be made available to everyone.”
