Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery
Orthopaedic problems relate to condition of the musculoskeletal
system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles
and nerves.
Orthopaedic surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and treatment -
both non-surgical and surgical, of problems involving the
musculoskeletal system. The aim of orthopaedic surgeons is to bring
relief to people suffering from injury or musculoskeletal disorder
by advancing the science, art and practice of orthopaedic surgery -
British Orthopaedics Association.
There are many orthopaedic sub-specialties and most orthopaedic
surgeons undertake further sub-specialty training or Fellowships,
restricting their practices to areas of particular expertise.
Examples of these subspecialties are:
- Hand surgery
- Shoulder and elbow surgery
- Total joint replacement (arthroplasty) e.g. hip replacement
and knee replacement
- Paediatric orthopaedics
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Spinal surgery
- Musculoskeletal oncology
- Surgical sports medicine
- Orthopaedic trauma
These sub-specialty areas of medicine are not exclusive to
orthopaedic surgery. For example, hand
surgery is practiced by some plastic
surgeons and spine surgery is practiced by some neurosurgeons.
Surgeons practicing at Bupa Cromwell Hospital cover all
sub-specialty interests.
